Clubs and Societies December 12

Baark. - Baark is celebrating another great year, having achieved its goal for 1,000 spay & neuters in the year.

The society said: “With thanks to your support and generosity throughout the year, we are so pleased to announce that for the second year running we have reached our target of 1,000 spay/neuters of animals in the Bahamas. We have travelled to Eleuthera, Andros, Inagua and Abaco doing MASH clinics along with our programs in Nassau. Once again, this will help significantly reduce the number of homeless animals.”

Baark is also inviting people to take part in a silent auction - with photos and descriptions of each item to be found on the group’s Facebook Page. Bidding is open until midnight on December 15.

Anyone wishing to donate to Baark can also do so through GlobalGiving - and help Baark become eligible for bonus awards of up to $3,000. For more information, visit baarkbahamas.org.

Events in 2015 include:

March 1 - The Potcakeman Super Sprint Mixed Team Relay.

April 18 - Baark Paw-ty

September 5 - The Potcakeman Triathlon

October 25 - Strut Your Mutt.

The Cancer Society of The Bahamas. - The Cancer Society of the Bahamas’ annual ‘Love lights a tree’ fundraising event is underway for the 24th year with the impressive Christmas tree in front of the Mall at Marathon the symbol of the appeal.

The lighting ceremony took place on November 28, when cancer survivors, patients, friends, their families and friends sang carols, heard the Kingsway Academy Children’s Choir and received a short, uplifting message from Pastor Paul Scavella, president of the South Bahamas Conference of the Seventh Day Adventists.

“This event, for many, heralds the start of the beautiful season of Christmas,” a statement from the Society said. “Every light has meaning; it is to remember a loved one, honour a friend going through treatment or simply as a donation to a Society that helps so many patients with all types of cancer.”

At its headquarters at East Terrace, Centreville, the Cancer Society of the Bahamas has a Cancer Caring Centre to which it welcomes patients from the Family Islands who are able to stay free of charge, driven to appointments and generally cared for at a difficult time in a comfortable environment.

The Society offers free PAP smear and PSA testing programmes throughout the Family Islands and cervical screening clinics in New Providence during May. It is reliant on donations and gifts and information can be obtained at www.cancersocietybahamas.org.
