Bahamians receive BORCO certificates

A further 15 Bahamians are fully certified to work at the Bahamas Oil Refining Company (BORCO) after completing an 18-month training course.

Eight land operators and eight marine operators completed the training. They are: Eljin Morrison, Kenron Clarke, Luther Martin, Lashawn Bain, Edward Adderley, Chadrick Sweeting and Samuel Ramlochan who are land operators, as well as Darren Rollins, Mario Williams, Sharad Saunders, Gerrard Russell, Demarco Saunders, Terrance Strachan and Desmond Stuart, who are marine operators.

“Buckeye continues to support BORCO in their efforts to train Bahamians in all aspects of the business, starting with the introduction of the business to local high school students, scholarship awards for technical studies, apprenticeship programmes, individualised management training programmes, mentorship programmes and specialised training programmes developed for the industry,” said Robert Gaffney, Buckeye’s vice-president of international operations.

During the training, the new operators learned skills including maintenance and repair of the storage tanks, along with technical equipment training associated with terminal operations. They also learned tasks associated with tanks and tanker ships, and how to handle product receipts at the terminal.

Training is conducted at BORCO on a regular basis in various levels and departments, to keep staff regularised to international standards.

Training courses are developed on an ‘as needed’ basis, and range from training of new employees in the technical aspects of the company through to management training for other members of the staff.

This most recent group of training graduates includes some employees that were reassigned to operations from other areas of the company, while others were new hires. On hand to present graduation certificates was Khalid Muslih, president of Buckeye international pipelines and terminals.
