Bapak employees fear for future

Employes at Bahamas Food Packaging (Bapak) are worried whether they will still have a job in the New Year, after the Christmas Eve fire that badly damaged the company’s Industrial Park premises.

All Tribune Business efforts to contact Glen Rogers, Bapak’s president, subsequent to the fire have proven unsuccessful. It is understood that his Ultra Pure Water business was also affected.

However, employees were quick to express concerns for their immediate futures, and that of the company, via social media.

One said: “Am still crying. It’s Bapak Limited. It was our last day to work for us office staff yesterday until the New Year.. But that won’t be happening. I still can’t believe it.”

The fire is understood to have also damaged a warehouse storing supplies for the Bahamian Starbucks and Subway franchises.

Another employee added: “Yes, Starbucks n’ John Bull warehouse all gone. We really out of a job on dis Xmas eve.”

Other Facebook posters, though, were slightly more optimistic. One said: “Glen Rogers and Fred Hazelwood [John Bull] are astute businessmen, and I expect their insurance is up to date.

“It’ll take time, but everything can be restored. The most important thing is not to have any loss of life. Let’s pray it’s not as bad as it looks.”
