REGATTA

BULL REG CLASS C

THE annual Bull Red Class C Regatta will be held in Black Point, Exuma, starting on Thursday (New Year’s Day). The regatta is slated to run through Saturday, January 3. There will be at least 12 boats competing, including defending champions Asue Draw Thunderbird, Keep Your Eyes on Him, Bulla Reg and the Golden Girl.

This year’s regatta, sponsored by Asue Draw, is being held in honour of the late Stomp McKenzie, who passed away in August. McKenzie was the former captain of Keep Your Eyes on Him, owned by Jeffery McKenzie.

The regatta is the first event for the year and will allow the boats to secure spots in the lead up to the Boat of the Year honours that will be returned with Asue Draw as the major sponsor. The event is expected to be held under the patronage of Prime Minister Perry Christie.

BASKETBALL

NPWBA ACTION

THE New Providence Women’s Basketball Association (NPWBA), now headed by Mynez Cargill-Sherman, has announced that a pre-season tournament is scheduled for January 6 followed by the opening of the regular season on Saturday (January 17) at the DW. Davis Gymnasium, Wilton Street.

The tournament will be divided into two divisions (primary and senior) for the title in four days of fun and action. The primary division is expected to compete all day on January 10, commencing at 10am. Cargill-Sherman said the primary schools will be invited in an effort to encourage the realisation of a girls’ mini- league in the not too distant future.

JOHNSON IN ACTION

TUREANO ‘Reno’ Johnson will be fighting Colombian Alex Theran in Madison Square Garden, New York, for the WBC Continental Americas middleweight title and the vacant WBA International middleweight title on Friday, January 9.

Johnson, 30, is coming off a sixth-round technical knockout victory over Colombian Humberto Toledo at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium on December 5.He is currently sporting a 17-1 win-loss record, identical to that of 24-year-old Theran, whose last fight was a sixth-round decision over Jhonatn Ricar in Barranquilla, Colombia, on October 11.

MASTERS SOFTBALL

MEETING

THE Masters Softball Association, preparing for the start of its new season, is slated to hold a general meeting for all new and old teams 7pm tonight at the William Thompson Softball Park, Southern Recreation Grounds,

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the official start of the season, which is scheduled for either the first or the second weekend in January, 2015.

Additionally, the association is looking to field a 40-member team to represent the Bahamas against the visiting Senior Moments softball team from the US, who will be here to play in their annual exhibition game. All teams are requested to have at least two representatives present.
