PRESIDENT Barack Obama is nominating a former White House lawyer, Cassandra Butts, to be the next US ambassador to the Bahamas.

Butts, 48, served as deputy White House counsel during Obama’s first year in office.

She was also general counsel for the White House transition team during Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Butts left the White House to serve as a senior adviser to an independent US foreign aid agency, the Millennium Challenge Corp.

She previously worked as an adviser to Democratic congressman Dick Gephardt of Missouri, who also served as the Democratic leader of the House.

Butts is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and was a classmate of Obama’s at Harvard Law School.

Hope this ambassador is able to appear to be free of close connections with any particular party operatives.

Most diplomats are political operatives. Butts will be no different from those Perry or Hubert sent overseas to be diplomats................ friends, family and lovers qualify for these jobs.

If she gets confirmed, here's hoping she shows more interest in The Bahamas than her predecessor Nicole Avant. She was another Obama buddy who was totally inept in the role.
