Fire hits Cable's Internet service

BUSH fires causing damage to a fibre optic cable resulted in disruptions to broadband Internet service on Abaco, Eleuthera and Grand Bahama, Cable Bahamas has confirmed.

The BISX-listed communications provider said its Network Operations Centre (NOC) network alarms sounded shortly before 5pm on Saturday.

It added that field crews were immediately dispatched to effect repairs in High Rock, east Grand Bahama.
Cable Bahamas’ Internet service was first impacted late Saturday afternoon, but services to the majority of customers were fully stabilised by 11 pm Saturday evening, the company said, adding that Internet service to all customers on these islands was fully restored by midday Sunday.

The company said its built-in, redundant system design enabled it to sustain service, although total capacity was reduced during the restoration process. Cable Bahamas said its cable TV and voice services were not affected.
