VOLLEYBALL

NPVA CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE defending champions Vixens took game one of the New Providence Women’s Volleyball Association’s best-of-five championship seris in four sets over the Johnson’s Cherry Bombers at the DW Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Behind Krystel Brown?’s six kills, five block shots and three aces, assisted by sister Cheryse Bain,? who finished with seven kills, three blocks and two aces and Laval Sands’ 19 assists, the Vixens won 25-21, 26-24, 24-26 and 25-15.

In the loss for the Cherry Bombers, Michelle Thompson? had 10 kills, a block and two aces. She was joined by Kelsie Johnson, who posted nine kills and four blocks. Tia Charlow? finished the evening with 38 assists.

In the men’s feature match, after losing the first set 22-25, the Scotiabank Defenders regrouped to win the next three sets and game 25-20, 25-23 and 25-22 over the Technicians. Jamaal Ferguson? led all scorers in the win with 10 kills, three aces and six digs. Shonari Hepburn? assisted with seven kills, three blocks and an ace. Tony Simon finished with 35 assists.

In the loss, Renaldo Knowles? led the Technicians with 12 kills, an ace and nine receptions. Muller Petit? had 10 kills and two aces to go with Audril Farquharson?’s 43 assists.

Game two in both series is scheduled to continue 7:30pm tonight.

BASKETBALL

NPWBA ACTION

DUE to the Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic being held at the AF Adderley Gymnasium, the New Providence Women’s Basketball Association has decided to take a break from its regular season action at the DW Davis Gymnasium this weekend.

Before taking the break, the Johnson Lady Truckers knocked off the Career Builders Cheetahs 69-63 as Shantel Rolle scored a game high 20 points with three rebounds, two assists and two steals Tuesday night. Latoya Rolle had 17 points with 15 rebounds and Janice Williams chipped in with 10 points and 11 rebounds. For the losers, Ruthann Simms scored 19 points with nine rebounds and four steals and Philicia Kelly had 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

THE Baptist Sports Council has announced that it will start its 2014 Basketball Classic on Saturday, March 1 at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. The matches on opening day are as follows:

DOUBLES TENNIS

THE eighth annual Tim’s Refrigeration Doubles Tennis Tournament is scheduled to be held at the Knowles Tennis Court in Palmetto Point, Eleuthera, March 22-23. Competition will be held in the ladies and men’s open doubles and the men’s 60 and over singles.
