The Guardian's strange headline

EDITOR, The Tribune.

First, I was worried when I saw that there was a turnover in the running of The Nassau Guardian. I was proud of the former Managing Editor who seemed to understand the awesome responsibility that goes with editing a national newspaper.

Then I felt good when I saw the announcement that two other relatively young Bahamians were taking over the top positions at The Guardian. Then I got worried again when I saw the front page lead headline in The Guardian this morning (Tuesday).

It was a newsy day: Man found shot on jitney; Rodney Moncur acquitted; alleged human trafficking airplane ram police; $800,000 drug bust; another man charged with Fox Hill shooting; foreign dive boats operating off Bimini.

But lo and behold The Guardian’s big front page lead story was Bran McCartney advising former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham to counsel young politicians!

I rubbed my eyes a couple times and looked again – but it was still there. It will be seen whether the young people now running The Guardian are able to make professional judgments about news value.

How in heaven’s name does that suggestion by Mr McCartney rate as a major story?

Even if he was a political leader with a seat in parliament (which he is not) that statement by him has little news value. Now I’m really…

WORRIED
