AUTHORITIES called on civic leaders yesterday to intervene in inner city communities in an effort to curb crimes of retaliation following a double shooting yesterday morning that left one man dead.

At about 9:40am, police arrived at Panza Court off Market Street to find two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both were taken to hospital, but one succumbed to his injuries shortly before 9pm last night.

Police said that the victims were standing in a group of men when a man shot them and fled on foot.

The Tribune understands that both victims suffered gunshot injuries following an argument.

Investigators later recovered a handgun and a shotgun from the area. They said active investigations are continuing.

When police arrived at the scene, both victims were still on the ground and bleeding profusely.

A short time later, a video was posted on Facebook. It showed one of the victims, who had collapsed, with serious injuries to his upper arm and face.

Police spokesman Superintendent Stephen Dean said: “It’s the tit-for-tat so to speak. The retaliations where persons hold feuds. Where they are not giving up protecting various turfs. We are putting out an appeal once again to invite persons, like our church leaders (and) stalwarts of the community, to come get involved on the ground with these persons. To assist us in these conflict resolutions because these persons need persons to talk to. They need persons to get to the bottom of these things before it happens.”

A resident who was near the shooting recalled how he was alerted to the incident.

“I heard someone say that’s gunshots,” the man said,  “And you know gunshots don’t have no respect for no one. So I get my next nephew who was going up the road and I say that’s gun going on up that way, let’s go this way.”

Police said they are following significant leads, but they further appealed to the public to come forward with any information they might have.
