FIVE immigrants who were arrested at the Sandy Point airport were charged with illegal landing in the Magistrate’s Court in Abaco on Tuesday.

Tomos Paula Tavera, 49; Mayovanex Garcia Pena, 37; Ramon Antonio Santos, 23; Roberto Carlo Herrera Caba, 34, all of the Dominican Republic, and Joseph Hugens, 41, of Haiti, appeared before Magistrate Ancella Evans.

The men pleaded guilty to illegal landing in the Bahamas and were each fined $300 or three months at Her Majesty Prison.

According to the reports, police acting on information, went to the airport in Sandy Point where they saw an aircraft landing on the runway.

Officers in a police vehicle went onto the runway in an attempt to stop the aircraft, which smashed into a police jeep. Five of the six persons onboard were arrested. The pilot, however, escaped into nearby bushes.

After the men paid their fines, they were handed over to officials of the Bahamas Immigration Department for deportation.

They will be flown into New Providence for repatriation.
