New boutique hotel aims to cater for plus-sized clients

AFTER ten years of planning, a new boutique hotel, simply called “The Resort”, will open in Eleuthera in May. It will become what developers say is the world’s only hotel/resort specifically for plus-size clientele.

The property sits on seven acres of private land on almost a mile of beach and features a fresh water pool, 10 over-sized guest rooms, two two-bedroom villas with living room and full kitchens and two one-bedroom villas, also with kitchens.

“Our bedrooms are almost twice the size of a standard hotel/resort room. WIFI, fans, A/C, lots of closet space, private patio area, beach towels, flat screen TV, clock radio wonderful plus size wicker furniture and so much more,” James King, managing director of The Resort told The Tribune.

Mr King said The Resort’s main goal is to offer a peaceful and private place to relax and unwind.

“With never more than 30 people on the property, you can socialise as much as you want or simply hideaway in one of our hammock stations or stake out your own space on our beach,” he said.

Mr King feels that the plus-size market is completely ignored by the hospitality industry and almost no consideration is made for the plus-size community.

The resort director said that initial interest in The Resort has been overwhelming.

“We opened a Facebook page two months ago and without any promotion we have over 2,300 people following this project.

“Various international groups, including Miss Plus Size International, have expressed support. We have received over 400 emails and calls even before we announced the location of The Resort Bahamas,” Mr King said.

Rates are inclusive of three unique meals a day as well as a mid-day snack. Every lunch and dinner will feature a special Caribbean offering that is sure to be a memorable dining experience.

The Resort also has a unique beverage policy.

“At the end of your vacation, you tell us what you think your bar bill should be and that is what you will be charged. We strongly believe in the honour system for the Plus-Size community,” Mr King said.

The project is 100 per cent owned by a Bahamian and all staff and management are expected to be locals from Eleuthera.

“It was very important to have a 100 per cent local staff. One of the things I love about the Family Islands is how friendly the locals are and I believe they will be wonderful ambassadors for this project,” Mr King said.

“This will also have a positive impact on the airport, taxi, small tour operators and food vendors.”
