A BUS was propelled into the air yesterday after colliding with a Toyota vehicle on West Bay Street.
Then, in a moment that shocked onlookers, the bus rather than overturning, landed on its wheels in the sand over the sea wall at Travellers’ Rest, West Bay Street.
The accident, which took place around 8:30am, left the Toyota badly damaged. The driver of the vehicle suffered injuries to his upper body, and a headache after the accident. The passengers in the bus had minor injuries. They were taken to hospital and later discharged. It is unclear what caused the accident.
Active police investigations continue.

Speed had to have been a factor...how fast were these folks going to have this bus propelled so high into the air that it could clear that wall and land on it's wheels? Most times passengers on the jitney aren't wearing seatbelts so I'm surprised no one was seriously hurt on the bus. It's a good thing tide isn't high.

Every day I see multiple buses driving in the middle lane, impeding traffic by not pulling over and overtaking at such high speeds, that it boggles me that the police haven't gotten stricter on them.
The rules of the road are non existent, the commissioner should give officers a % of the ticket amount issued or a quota so that officers will start ticketing drivers until they respect the road.

I can recall when an innocent school girl got ran over by a bus driver on Carmichael road several years ago. Bystanders became very angry and wanted to attack the driver. It was then that this administration promised to correct this dangerous element of our society. To date nothing has changed. Perhaps the lazy, useless politicians who are in charge of this area are waiting for several bodies to be dragged from one of these buses before they pretend to want to do something. But what most amazes me is that the majority of Bahamians are complacent with this mess that we live in. They live like monkeys in a jungle, swinging from limb to limb.

Cause believe you me, while people who care gettin they pressure raise from these foolishness, the people in power don't give a dam. They know this is their last term in power. Most jitney drivers work for someone who actually owns the plate and they have to pay daily rent on the plate or get it taken away. And guess who owns a fair number of the independent jitneys ? Various cops. That is why they don't get tickets. And the jitney drivers drive like fools because they have to beat out the other drivers for the fares, so that they can pay the daily rent on their plate. It is a screwed up system that defies regularisation.

I did not know that police were some of the owners of these plates; that's interesting.
Taxi drivers do the same thing, driving recklessly just to beat out the next guy on the fare. I've had to pull over on the side of West Bay St . to avoid being hit by a taxi evidently trying to get back to the airport in order to get the next bunch of tourists. A lot of times they have passengers in these vehicles, yet they drive like they're on a race track with no regulations.
It's crazy. As I have said before and will keep saying, unless we weed out the corruption from the top down, put our efforts into education and family planning , sound morals etc, we will never turn this country around. IT WONT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT ! But we must start somewhere.....thas my 5 cents

Jitney problem can be solved overnight. Simply start a point system, get a certain number of points and you lose your license forever. Make it retroactive, any jitney drivers with traffic infringements within the last two years should have points assigned to them on day one. By mid summer we'll have all new jitney drivers and they'll obey the law or lose their livelihood. Apply this to taxi drivers too...

1) Nationalize the public transit system into a government owned, manageable cooperative.
2) I personally saw the beached jitney. How he flew over the beach bulkhead is beyond me.
3) I have it on good authority that the jitney did not have air traffic control clearance.
4) Until a full bus load of passengers are killed, government will continue kicking the can.
5) Thank God myself and children do not ride jitneys or depend on government for anything.
