Kiwanis Club. - On May 17, the Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach held an Equestrian Horse Show after a 25-year hiatus, under the theme Revival 2014. Members of the club assembled at Camperdown Stables at 7am to ensure that there were minimal glitches, despite the inclement weather. The reason for the horse show was two-fold – to reintroduce this club’s signature horse show to The Bahamas and to raise much needed cash for the Seahorse Institute’s Autism Program.

“Each year, the President of Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach decides on a charity that they would like to donate funds to. As a teacher, I wanted to give to an educational cause since I know the value of having a sound education – it is the only way we can positively affect our country and eradicate the surge of criminality. Ironically, Dr Jill Farrell, who sits on the board of directors at the Seahorse Institute, contacted me asking if the Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach could assist the Seahorse Institute with their Autism Program. They had also had a recent fire which destroyed their building and so they were in need of assistance. I saw this as a God-send, and immediately responded affirmatively,” said President Joan.

President Joan also added that whatever amount was raised, a donor pledged to double it.

So on Wednesday, July 2, Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach presented Dr Jill with the cheque from the proceeds of the Horse Show to the tune of $3,000. Dr Major, president of Seahorse Institute thanked Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach for their donation and announced that the $3,000 had just turned into $6,000!

Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach wishes to thank the public for their support in assisting in this dream come true for both the club and Sea Horse Institute.

President Joan would also like to congratulate the five newest members to its club: Kiwanians Shavonne, Sophia, Leza, Zindora and Michelle. Thank you for giving of your time, talents and treasures to building Kiwanis in The Bahamas, and indeed the world.

Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach meets on Wednesdays at 7:30pm at Casuarina’s Restaurant, Cable Beach.
