AN ELDERLY Haitian couple face seven years in jail if convicted of their alleged involvement in a $42,000 drug seizure on Monday.

Wilson Louis, 61, and his 53-year-old wife, Suzanne Delisma-Louis, both from Balls Alley, appeared on Wednesday before Magistrate Andrew Forbes facing two counts of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply related to the cocaine and marijuana seizures.

It is alleged that on July 7, they were in possession of $37,000 worth of marijuana and $5,000 worth of cocaine. Shortly before 2pm on Monday, Drug Enforcement Unit officers acted on a tip that led them to a home on Balls Alley, off Shirley Street, where they conducted a search and discovered the drugs.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges and will stand trial on October 8.

The magistrate, with the assistance of an interpreter, told them that they would be denied bail and remanded to prison because of the nature of the offences. He informed them of their right to apply to the Supreme Court for bail. They were not represented at Wednesday’s arraignment.
