Athletes tune up for Commonwealth Games

QUARTER-milers Chris ‘Fireman’ Brown and LaToy Williams, along with sprinter Anthonique Strachan and long jumper Bianca ‘BB’ Stuart, continue to prepare for the Commonwealth Games.

The big event is set for Glasgow, Scotland, July 23 to August 3 and the four top athletes tuned up for the Games by competing in their specialties in two separate meets over the weekend.

At the Glasgow Grand Prix on Saturday at Hampden Park, Scotland, the site for the athletic competition at the games, Brown raced to a second place finish in the men’s 400 metres in 44.94 seconds. The race was won by Isaac Makwala of Botswana in 44.71 with Matthew Hudson-Smith of Britain taking third in 44.97.

The race also featured Luguel�n Santos of the Dominican Republic, who was fourth in 45.14. Martyn Rooney of Britain was fifth in 45.17, Conrad Williams also of Britain was sixth in 45.46, Kevin Borlee of Belgium, seventh in 45.73 and Nijel Amos of Botswana, eighth in 46.34.

Also at the meet was Strachan, who came in seventh in the women’s 200m in 22.87, beating only Samantha Henry-Robinson of Jamaica, who was eighth in 23.43. Winning the race was Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands in 22.34. American Allyson Felix was second in 22.35 and Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare got third in 22.41. Fourth was Jodie Williams of Britain in 22.60 and Americans Shalonda Solomon and Kimberlyn Duncan fifth and sixth in 22.67 and 22.86 respectively.

And Stuart, the lone competitor in a field event, was eighth in the women’s long jump with her best leap of 6.52 metres or 21-feet, 4 3/4-inches on her fifth attempt. Winning the event was American Tianna Bartoletta with 6.98m (22-10 3/4) on her fourth jump. Great Britain’s Katrina Johnson-Thompson (6.92m or 22-8 1/2) and Shara Proctor (6.82m or 22-4 1/2).

Meanwhile in the United States at the 2014 Harry Jerome Track Classic, national men’s 400m champion LaToy Williams won the race in 45.22. He beat out a field that included American Josh Mance, second in 45.37 and Canadian Daundre Barnaby, who was third in 45.55.

The quartet are now awaiting on the announcement by the Bahamas Olympic Committee for the athletic team that has been ratified for the Commonwealth Games. Last week, the BOC only named the teams for swimming, boxing, cycling, wrestling and judo.

The BOC was waiting on the list from the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations following the completion of their National Open Track and Field Championships. The nationals was to serve as the final qualifier for athletes wishing to compete at the Commonwealth Games.
