Our big brother - not our enemy

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Thanks for allowing me this space; I am voicing my feelings on a subject matter that appeared in one of the daily’s the first week of July 2014, where the head of our country rebutted a report that the US State Department released on the failure of the Bahamas Government to bring into fruition its promises, etc, for this country - The Bahamas and the Bahamian people.

One would like to say here without any contempt ,as well as without any bias towards a particular political party; one can believe that such a report is true, and as far as has been observed, since the PLP may have tried, but, apparently blundered through many of its set forth objectives and goals prior to being elected, and, once they were in the House.

To see this, one merely has to look at the handling of the crime epidemic in this country, the gaming referendum which was confusion; unemployment in the Bahamas which handling is not too impressive; then we have the BTC take back, it amounts to nothing concrete or beneficial for the poor man, thus, even the accomplishments of the Government since coming into office is blighted.

I feel that the response coming from the Bahamas Government to the US State Department on that report was a bit harsh, rude and could give misguided Bahamians a dim understanding of the USA.

This is not good for our relations. Bahamians should consider the USA as a type of saviour for these isles, and it has been, since time. So I feel it should be imperative of any Bahamian Government to work more and more closely, as opposed to pulling away from the United States.

The Bahamas’ primary concern should be fostering good and permanent relations with the USA, not trying to place blame or vent accusations, this only shows there is a possibility the PLP Government is anti-American, and so are most of its followers; and this condition was initially and deeply imbedded beginning from the late 1960s onward to the early 1990s.

All one has to do is go in review of certain events and issues of that era. Now looking further, and a broader deeper range of that response to the USA report, The Bahamas should place emphasis on establishing good will, instead of stirring up a row over a matter that can adversely affect both The Bahamas and the USA, as far as this writer is concerned both countries will benefit greatly if America was to have increased influences in the enactment of our laws, also the social and public rights of Bahamians, whereby democracy and fair justice to all could become more widely established.

The Bahamas should look up to the USA as a friend who means well – as a big brother, so to speak and not the enemy.
