THE Bahamas Humane Society is offering a free distemper vaccine for dogs today at the Thelma Gibson Primary School for those who cannot afford to get the vital medication for their canines.

The exercise will take place from 2pm to 7pm today at the school’s campus in Elizabeth Estates.

“The island of New Providence is currently facing a serious outbreak of canine distemper virus, a dangerous and often fatal disease in pet dogs,” the BHS said in a statement released yesterday.

“To assist those less fortunate and their pets, the Bahamas Humane Society is providing free distemper vaccines.

“These vaccines have been generously provided by Humane Society International. The clinic is free of charge and is aimed at establishing a ‘ring of immunity’ within New Providence to protect our pets.”

The Humane Society said that further dates and locations for vaccination campaigns will be announced at a later date.

Animal health officials warn that the virus “is a highly contagious viral disease that is airborne and affects mostly puppies and some adult dogs”.

They add that there is no treatment or cure for the disease, but it is preventable through vaccination.

It is not contagious to humans or cats.

Animal health experts have urged dog owners who have not had their pet vaccinated in the past month to vaccinate their dog immediately.

Dog owners are also advised to keep their pet on property and avoid off-property walks and play groups.
