I promised myself when I passed 70 that I would not write to the press on controversial matters and so far, I think I have kept my promise. But no longer.

When I read Thursday’s papers, I honestly thought what I was reading was a mistake. There was no way that the government of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas would exempt webshops from VAT. Unfortunately most Bahamians leave politicians to make the decisions, although I have seen a trend in recent months to change this.

Unfortunately, the country is in a predicament, unlike any time since the recession of the 1930s, consequently there is a need for increased taxes (partly due to gross overspending by consecutive governments).

I cannot accept that webshops should be exempt and I hope responsible, concerned Bahamians will agree with me. How can you VAT electricity, but not webshops? This is criminal. Is the government truly aware of the message they are sending to the Bahamian people?

If there is a business that should be heavily taxed, it is surely webshops. We have heavy taxes on tobacco and alcoholic products, why not on webshops? They all have a negative impact on society.

The legislation for the implementation of VAT will be debated within a few weeks. I challenge Bahamians to unite and demand their representative to amend this portion of the Bill (call them, write them, e-mail).

It can be done. It is up to us, the people, to make it happen.
