Poster competition to 'Save the Wetlands'

The Sandals Foundation yesterday held a poster competition for primary school students who participated in Experiential Education’s ‘Ride to Save the Wetlands’.

The Ride to Save the Wetlands project, which is funded by the Sandals Foundation, takes kids out to Bonefish Pond National Park to experience first-hand the mangrove eco-system. The children can look, feel and taste in order to get a greater understanding of why the Bahamas’ mangrove forests are important and why they need to be protected.

Many of the student’s posters portrayed the difference between a healthy mangrove area and a polluted one, and illustrated the damage humans can do to these fragile areas.

Many of the posters had as their theme the simple, but important message of “Save our Wetlands”.

“These kids communicated beautifully in their posters the reasons we need to respect these eco-systems,” said Chester Robards, Sandals Foundation spokesperson.

“Some of these posters were so beautifully done, they could be used in a national campaign.”

Participating schools included St Bede’s Catholic Primary School, Our Lady’s, St Cecelia, St Thomas More, Xavier’s Lower School, Sts Francis and Joseph, Akhepran International Academy, Kingsway Academy, Gerald Cash Primary, C V Bethel, St John’s and Aquinas College.
