TENNIS

AFTER losing their opening match at the American Zone III Davis Cup tie in Puerto Rico on Monday, the Bahamas’ four-member team had the day off on Tuesday at the Palmes Athletic Club in Humacao.

The team, captained by Marvin Rolle, lost 2-1 to Cuba in their opening match of Pool A. In that match, Kevin Major fell to Willia, Dorantes Sanchez 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Devin Mullings won 6-2, 6-0 over Randy Blanco. But in doubles, Rolle and Jamal Adderley fell to Ernesto Alfonso and Blanco 6-3, 1-6, 3-6 in the pivotal doubles.

The Bahamas will be back in action today when they take on Honduras. They will close out round robin play on Thursday against Panama. The team will have to win at least one of them in order to be in contention for the cross over playoffs where the top two teams will go on to play the top two teams out of Pool B, comprising of Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda.

At the end of the tie, the top two winners will advance to zone II for 2015.

TRIATHLON

The 2014 Pineappleman Sprint Triathlon and the Junior Pie event will take place on Saturday in Gregory Toen, Eleuthera.

The event will get started at 8:45 am for the triathlon, inclusive of a 500 metre swim, 16 kilometre cycle and a 5-kilomtre run. The junior event will begin at 10:30 am that will comprise of a 100 metre swim and an 800m run.

The top three finishers in each division will win a prize. The prizes include a three-night stay at the Pineapple Fields Resort, Ipad, a one-night stay and seafood platter at the Rainbow Inn, watches, Sands beer and cash.

CYCLING

THE New Providence Cycling Association has released its schedule of events for the month of June.

The events are as follows:

Monday, 9th - Whit Monday Holiday Cycling Sprint Classic, covering 38 miles from the Caves around the western end of the island and back. The categories include Open Women and Juniors who will cover 20 miles along with the novice cyclists.

Wednesday, 11th - Time Trial Classic at the one-mile cycling track starting at 6pm with 1 mile individual Time Trials Classic. Prizes for top five finishes.

Wednesday, 18th - Time Trial Classic at the one-mile cycling track starting at 6pm with 1 mile individual Time Trials Classic. Prizes for top five finishes.

Sunday, 22nd - 60 miles road race aka The Luck of the Draw, covering the western area of the island with an 6:35am start from the Arawak Cay on West Bay Street next to the Fish Fry.

Wednesday, 25th - Time Trial Classic at the one-mile cycling track starting at 6pm with 1 mile individual Time Trials Classic. Prizes for top five finishes.

Saturday, 28th - Grand Bahama Road Cycling Championship, schedule for Freeport. This race is also one of the races that is used by the Bahamas Cycling Federation in the selection of National Team members for the up coming Caribbean Cycling Championships for both senior and junior competitors.

The BCF’s national individual time trials is scheduled for Thursday, July 10, while the national road cycling championship will take place on Sunday, July 13.

SOFTBALL

THE New Providence Softball Association will continue its regular season action this week with the following matches on tap:

Thursday

7pm Sigma Wildcats vs COB Lady Caribs.

8:30 pm Mighty Mitts vs Arnette Sporting Hitmen.

Saturday

7 pm Proper Care Pool Young Stars vs Sigma Bracketts.

8:30 pm Sigma Wildcats vs Electro Telecom Lady Hitters.
