Award-Winning Bahamian fashion designer Theodore Elyett will be presented with the Caribbean Style & Culture Award of Excellence in Fashion Innovation in Washington, DC on June 27 in honour of the ninth annual Caribbean American Heritage Month.

The Caribbean Style & Culture Fashion Showcase, organised by Karib Nation, celebrates and rewards the contributions of those that have significantly impacted the Caribbean region’s rich culture and burgeoning fashion industry.

“The Award of Excellence in Fashion Innovation exemplifies the innovation of Caribbean fashion through unique and compelling designs, production and presentation,” said Cornel Jones, committee chair for the event.

“Theodore Elyett’s remarkable and intricate infusion of cycling trends without sacrificing culture is why we are proud to present him with this award.”

This year’s event will feature 16 of the leading Caribbean fashion designers from countries including the Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.

“The route to pursuing a viable and successful career in the fashion industry is not without its challenges, especially while trying to position the brand to someday stand its ground alongside acclaimed international labels,” said Mr Elyett. “It is encouraging to know that throughout my climb to that goal, there are organisations like Karib Inc that support and encourage the development of fashion talents regionally. Accepting this award continues to further position our brand as ‘the fashion label of the Bahamas’.”

In addition to the Excellence in Fashion Innovation Award, Mr Elyett was recently nominated for a 2014 Bahamian Icon Award in the Fine Art category. The Icon Awards recognise Bahamians who have exemplified excellence and achievement in their respective fields.

Mr Elyett is currently working on his upcoming summer and fall collections. The Theodore Elyett (TE) fall lookbook showcasing 30 images of the collection will be released in July. Following that, a summer block party to introduce the Watermelon summer collection will be held in August at the Tanya Saunders Boutique, where the line will retail.
