POLICE do not have any suspects in custody in connection with the $500,000, which was reported missing from the Customs office in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, according to head of the Central Detective Unit Superintendent Paul Rolle.
He told The Tribune yesterday that the police received a report of the missing money last month from the Customs office. As a result, they have launched an investigation.
Reports had surfaced that the deposits – which were made up of cash and cheques – left the port in Central Abaco with a customs officer, but disappeared during the short drive to the Royal Bank of Canada.
“We’ve received a report on the matter and we are conducting our investigations into this incident, but no one is custody,” Supt Rolle said. He said it was too early in the investigation to release more details. “I do not know the full circumstances behind this disappearance but when the investigations are complete and we look at the evidence, any numbers of charges can be filed against the persons believe to be responsible.”
North Abaco MP Renardo Curry confirmed to The Tribune on Friday that the matter was before police as to how a substantial sum of the Treasury’s money was misplaced.
“I recently heard about the matter and I understand it is under investigation, so I can’t speak specifically to the issue,” Mr Curry said.
“But in any instance, I’m sure the government will get to the bottom of it and find out what has transpired in the accusation. Of course, in an investigation you have to find out the truth before you utter any sentiments concerning the matter. So that’s my position.”
“In talks you hear a lot of different things. So you can’t just rely on third or fourth party information. Police are getting to the bottom of it. So the investigation will prove exactly what is what. You can rest assured that if there is some mishandling of funds, the government will follow the law of the land.”
Last week a representative from the Bahamas Christian Network, which is based in Abaco, said only $30,000 of the missing money was in cash, the remainder was in cheques.

300'000 plus 100'000 = 400'000. So whoever PLP politician has an open tab with the government (RPT or BEC) should get in touch. There is a 100'000 grant available.

The Tribune could probably fill their pages with similar stories. ~We have a report of over inflated contracts at a government ministry, a recently firmed company associated with the minister was awarded the contract. The minister soon after built a 1m dollar house on his 60,000 salary and is reportedly driving a new luxury car. No suspects have been arrested.

I am no criminologist, but I would think it would be a safe bet to start by locking up the Central Abaco customs officer that drove off with the loot that disappeared in his custody.

Might as well blame this crime on Illegal Haitians. Abaco is inundated with them, they mysteriously appear and we can pin a whole bunch of crimes on them.
Capture the first one you can rundown, give him a fair cowboy trial and prosecute him to fullest extent of the law!
