WHAT'S ON: CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

The Antique Auto Club of The Bahamas

The Antique Auto Club of The Bahamas recently held elections of officers and directors for the years 2014-2015. Elections are held every two years. Incoming president Don Pinder said: “I am very excited and honoured at having a turn leading this great club and hope to maintain the standard set by previous administrations. I want to extend my personal thanks to past presidents Brendan Foulkes and Richard Blake before him for their fine leadership over the past four years. I am pleased to welcome past president Peter Armstrong back to the board and to have IPP Brendan and other past presidents Don Aranha and Murray Forde remaining as board members.”

The club was formed in 1987 by six men (including Aranha and Forde) interested in Vintage Automobiles and has grown to a membership of 65 men and women. While the original intention was that of a hobby and social group, the club has evolved into a significant contributor to community service in the country with a focus on assisting underprivileged children.

The club’s major fund (and fun) raising event is its Annual Antique Auto Show, with the 2014 Show scheduled for Saturday, March 22. Show chairman Wilfred Rolle advised: “We have a slight change of venue this year and will be holding the show just east of the Fish Fry under the big Speed Week Tent. We expect to have at least 60 to 70 vehicles on display and believe we will experience the same support from our corporate sponsors and the general public, as well as the attendance of visiting tourists, numbers of which have been increasing in recent years.”

The beneficiary of this year’s show proceeds is a young child in need of heart surgery and the club is again working through the Sir Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation to assist with the expenses.

Mr Foulkes added: “We had such a heartwarming experience working through the Sassoon Heart Foundation last year to assist three-year-old Rushon Fox, that we decided to work with them again.” The main source of the fundraising is the Steak and Chicken Cook-out. The price remains unchanged at $10.00 and tickets are available from club members.
