Fire breaks out on barge near Abaco

A FIRE erupted onboard a 730-foot triple-deck barge, miles north-east of Abaco last week.

The barge was travelling to Puerto Rico from Jacksonville, Florida, according to reports.

It was being towed by a 127-foot tugboat and was full of containerized cargo owned by the Crowley Shipping Company.

Firefighting tugboats were dispatched to monitor the situation and offer assistance.

No injuries or environmental damage were reported and investigations into the fire’s cause are continuing.

After the fire was controlled on Saturday, Crowley representatives met representatives from various local agencies after which the Port Controller granted permission for the barge to sail into Freeport Harbour.

An emergency operating centre was established in Grand Bahama to manage the situation and provide information to government departments.

Yesterday the barge safely arrived in Grand Bahama’s shipyard.

An incident management team, consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, the Port Department, the BEST Commission and the Department of Environment Health Services, is continuing to monitor the situation.
