ASHLEY Moss has been dominant since her debut for the Holland College Hurricanes and has been the catalyst in the team’s historic berth to the Canadian national tournament.

The Hurricanes will play the first nationals game in school history when they take on the Algonquin Thunder 7:30pm tonight (Atlantic time) in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, hosted in Saint-Lambert, Quebec.

In her first year with the programme, Moss finished the regular season averaging a double double - 11.3 points and 12.8 rebounds per game.

Moss was named a second team Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association All-Star selection. She helped the Hurricanes to a 19-2 record overall and claimed the first ACAA silver medal in school history following a loss to the St Thomas University Tommies.

The Hurricanes enter the tournament at No. 6 in the CCAA national rankings.

It is expected to be arguably the most challenging game of the season for the Hurricanes as they face a Thunder team which claimed the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association title. They also boasted a 16-0 regular season record.

The winner will advance to the CCAA semifinals to face the winner of the Champlain Cavaliers and the aforementioned Tommies.

According to the Hurricanes’ Athletic Department, all CCAA nationals’ games can be watched live at www.sportscanada.tv while the Hurricanes will be covered through www.facebook.com/hollandhurricanes and www.twitter.com/hc_hurricanes with game updates.

Moss has been a dual threat, scoring and on the boards since she first suited up for the Hurricanes back in November. She was named the Hurricanes’ Women’s Student Athlete of the Week three times over the course of the season.

In her first official regular season game with the Hurricanes, Moss delivered a dominant performance in her team’s season opener.

In the Hurricanes’ 85-31 over the Dal-AC Rams, she finished with a double double - 19 points and 12 rebounds. Her dominance on the defensive end also included three blocks and three steals.

Moss is a part of a highly touted incoming class which saw the Hurricanes begin the season ranked No.10 in the CCAA rankings.

They were also the only team in the ACAA to be nationally ranked, later joined by the Tommies.

Moss is a former Bahamian national team member and multiple All-Star selection with the Bommer G Angels of the New Providence Basketball Association.

At the high school level, she starred for Faith Temple Warriors. She is currently enrolled in the sports and leisure management programme at Holland.

“I want to be a better person and player at the same time, and Holland College seems like the right place to be to make that happen,” said Moss, a cousin to former Hurricane and current UPEI Panther Donnie Moss.

“She is a tremendous athlete, shot blocker and rebounder. Once she gets comfortable with the Canadian game, she is really going to be an impact player in the league,” said Hurricanes’ head coach Mike Connolly in an interview with the Moose Jaw Times Herald’s Jason Malloy.
