Diversity key at Lyford Cay

EDITOR, The Tribune.

We were disappointed to read the May 13 article reporting a parent’s concern about the way that a “multicultural school out west” was addressing racial incidents on campus. The name of the school was not mentioned leaving the public confused about the school in question.

We would like to make it clear that Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) is not the school cited in the article.

Diversity is one of the cornerstones of our great school and at LCIS we value our Bahamian and Caribbean heritage as well as our international perspective. LCIS provides an environment which demonstrates respect, dignity, equity and safety for all members of the community. LCIS believes that every member of the school community is equal in dignity and worth. Every person has a right to equal treatment without discrimination because of race, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability.

By being part of our community, students, parents and staff members automatically assume the obligation to comply with the provisions of the Code of Conduct, which emphasises the school’s commitment and determination to act promptly against any incident of harassment and/or discrimination. Any form of discrimination or harassment is prohibited and the school deals systematically and diligently with all complaints.

As a school, a comprehensive campaign against bullying, harassment and discrimination has been at the forefront of our concerns for many years. We have shared consistently our views, actions and research with the larger community and have invited renowned experts in this field to share their work with us and the other schools on the island.

We are proud of who we are and we hope this provides some clarity for the general public.
