NOW that the newest chapter of the CHAMPS organisation has been launched, members are ready to extend its outreach to communities in Grand Bahama.

CHAMPS, which stands for “Chosen, Honoured, Appointed, Motivated, Positive Sisters”, is geared towards young women between the ages of 16 and 25.

The group held its launch event at the Circle Mall in Freeport last week, where members and participants were advised of the vision, mission and goals of the chapter. The launch was chaired by Samita Ferguson, CEO, who created the organisation to empower and unite young Bahamian women. CHAMPS was first formed in April 2010.

Ms Ferguson said the opening of a Freeport chapter demonstrates the group’s commitment to seeing lives changed for the better.

“One of the best things about the launch was seeing the hunger and desire for a positive young women’s programme taking place in Freeport. The connection was as if the young ladies and advisors were already working together for a long time. The synergy and enthusiasm was on point,” she said.

The afternoon also included repeating the pledge, as well as greetings from Damaris Thompson, Women’s Ministry Director for the Church of God of Prophecy Bahamas.

“(Minister Thompson) encouraged the group to remain focused, relevant and committed upon completion of the Nassau team and Freeport team circling one another in blessings. I then declared the chapter officially opened,” she said.

During the event, Ms Ferguson spoke about “stepping into one’s purpose” and having enough drive to maximises one’s potential.

“Obstacles may come, but seeing the goal ahead and not looking back due to distractions will make the way easier. Through prayer and commitment to God all things will fall in place. These are just some of the things I shared with them,” Ms Ferguson said.

One of the immediate plans goals of the new chapter will involve spreading the word throughout Grand Bahama and adopting a community, Ms Ferguson said.

“We are going to tap into community outreach and empower young women to tap into their gift and talents. We will also spend valuable time at the children’s home to also conduct outreach and through positive sessions and workshops,” she said.

The lead advisor for the Freeport chapter is La’tique Morris. Other advisors of CHAMPS include Nicole Adams, Ava Barr and Raquel Pinder.

The advisors are tasked with ensuring that all duties are met and are consistent with the Nassau chapter.

CHAMPS also has little sisters programme, which seeks to empower as kingdom builders holistically in the community, at home, school and church.

In the past the group has hosted a number of empowerment seminars and events to demonstrate its mission.

The group recently held its ‘Building Blocks to Success’ event at Starbucks in Palmdale.

There are currently 20 members in the Nassau chapter. Another branch is expected to launch in Exuma during the month of August.
