Yacht Club gearing up for finish of Nassau Cup Ocean Race

THE Nassau Yacht Club is gearing up for the finish of the 2014 Nassau Cup Ocean Race hosted by Nassau Yacht Club, Coral Reef Yacht Club, Lauderdale Yacht Club and Storm Trysail Club and managed by the Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC).

The prestigious international event is being locally sponsored by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company Limited, both of which have been very supportive of local and international sailing events over the years.

Since 1934, some of the best offshore sailors in the world have battled for the prestigious Miami to Nassau Cup, including world-famous sailors Ted Turner, Dennis Conner, Dick Bertram, and Ted Hood, aboard their legendary boats.

The demanding ocean race is open to boats over 30 feet in length and is one of the oldest races in this hemisphere. Starting in Government Cut, Miami, Florida on November 13, racers finish at the western entrance to Nassau Harbour on Friday, November 14.

The current course record is 13 hours, 31 minutes and 30 seconds. Today’s modern boats just need the right conditions to claim this legendary prize, and racers of all types will enjoy the navigational and crew challenge of the race across the Gulf Stream.

Sixteen boats have already entered well before the entry deadline of November 7 and a few more entries are anticipated. So far there is only one Bahamian registered boat entered.

Sailing race enthusiasts will be able to track the boats via live internet feed at www.nassaucup.org. For further information, contact John Lawrence (242) 677-1900.
