BSC Classic opens with huge victories

WHILE their co-ed team continued where they left off last year, St Paul’s men avenged their championship loss by pulling off two huge victories to start the Baptist Sports Council’s 2014 Softball Classic.

In a double header last night in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex which were both stopped via the 10-run rule, Golden Gates routed St John’s 15-5 and their men doubled up St Paul’s 20-10.

Newly acquired Lorenzo Carter belted a two-run home run in a nine-run first inning and Anton Rolle and Eugene Pratt both added a three-run shot and D’Andre Rigby had a solo blast in an 11-run second inning as last year’s runners-up Golden Gates took apart the defending champions St Paul’s.

Alfred ‘Skater’ Munnings went the distance for the win. Jason Sweeting got the start for St Paul’s but he only lasted until the second after he gave up all but two of the runs before he was replaced by Peter Rahming.

Marcellus Hall was the big spark for St Paul’s, going 3-for-3 with a RBI single, a two-run double and a two-run homer, but it wasn’t enough.

Richard Bain went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a two-run triple and Lorenzo Carter was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer to lead the defending champions as they scored eight runs in the first, three in the second and four in the third for the easy win. Crystal Taylor helped out with a single, two RBI and a run scored.

Ken Wood Jr, the winning pitcher, helped his own cause by going 3-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Addie Finley Sr was the losing pitcher.

Thela Johnson had a two-run triple, scoring a run, Davin Duncombe had one hit, scoring twice and Donnette Edwards was 2-for-2 in the loss for last year’s runners-up.
