A MAN was fatally shot in the Yellow Elder Gardens subdivision last night, pushing the year’s murder count to 101.

Police confirmed they received reports of a fatal shooting on Seymour Street just after 9pm. Police did not release further details on the homicide before press time.

Police also reported that a man who robbed a convenience store of cash is in serious condition in hospital after being shot by an officer shopping in the store at the time.

The incident took place on Saturday, and was one of six armed robberies that police reported over the weekend.

According to reports, around 7:30pm the suspect, armed with a handgun walked into a convenience store on Sea Breeze Lane and demanded cash.

The cashier complied and gave the suspect a small amount of money from the cash register. A police officer, who was a customer in the store at the time, confronted the suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon, a statement from the RBPF said.

The suspect refused and pointed the weapon at the officer, police reported.

In fear of his life the officer shot the suspect once in the left side of his body, police said.

Chief Superintendant Paul Rolle, officer in charge of the Central Detective Unit, could not say yesterday if the officer was on or off duty at the time of the shooting.

Police recovered from the suspect a handgun with a quantity of ammunition and the stolen cash, the report said.

The suspect was taken to hospital, where he is detained in serious condition under heavy police guard.

Police are also investigating two armed robberies that took place on Sunday.

In the first incident, shortly after 12:30am, a woman was walking on Robinson Road when three men armed with handguns robbed her of her handbag containing personal items before fleeing on foot.

In the second incident, shortly after 2am, a man was parked in his silver coloured 2009 Honda Accord, license plate number 228519, at a service station on Carmichael Road, when two men in a maroon coloured Honda Accord pulled up, took his car and sped off.

Police are also investigating another three armed robberies that took place on Friday and Saturday.

In the first incident, shortly after 6:30pm on Friday, a woman was in front of a bar on Village Road when a man armed with a handgun robbed her of her 2004 Nissan Primera vehicle and sped off.

Four and a half hours later, a man was at Gladstone Road when a man armed with a handgun robbed him of a 2010 Kia Sportage, license number 221174, and sped off.

In the third incident, shortly before 4pm Saturday, a man was at his Garden Hills home when a man armed with a handgun robbed him of his 2014 Civic vehicle and sped off.

Investigations into all of these matters are continuing.
