Ferguson named to All-Star team for a stellar season

HIS collegiate career ended with a loss, but Demetrius Ferguson still had a successful year as he ended his tenure with the St Francis Xavier X-Men.

The X-Men lost in the Subway AUS Loney Bowl, 29-7 to the Mount Allison Mounties. Ferguson finished with 3.5 tackles in the loss. He was named to the AUS defensive All-Star team for a stellar season. He finished the AUS season third in tackling with 46 and also added two interceptions.

The Mounties will now advance to play in the CIS Mitchell Bowl on November 22 in Ontario. The winner of the CIS Mitchell Bowl will advance to face the winner of the CIS Uteck Bowl in the 50th Telus Vanier Cup being played at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium in Montreal, Quebec, on Saturday, November 29.

St FX currently finished the season at 5-5, while the Mounties made school history with their 9-0 undefeated season.

Ferguson has been particularly effective against the Mounties and was named “Defensive Athlete of the Week” for his performance in the regular season finale.

The senior defensive back led all StFX defenders in tackles in the loss with seven solo tackles and four assisted tackles in the game. He also had one interception and a breakup for the X-Men. It was his third “Athlete of the Week” honour for the season.

In week six he was named the Defensive Athlete of the Week for his performance in the X-Men’s 36-6 win over St Mary’s University. He led all StFX defenders in tackles with eight solo tackles and one assisted tackle in the game.

In week four, Ferguson was named the X-Men Football Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in his team’s September 27 loss to the Montreal Carabins. He had a then season high 8.5 tackles in the game, including eight solo tackles, and also had two punt returns for 26 yards and a kick-off return for 18 yards.

Defensively, he added one tackle for a loss.

In his sophomore season, Ferguson came to the X-Men and registered a career high 33.5 tackles, six passes broken up, one forced fumble, one half sack and an interception which he returned for a 78-yard touchdown.

As a junior, he finished with 20.5 tackles, three passes broken up, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and a career high three interceptions.

In a September 14 game against the Concordia Stingers, Ferguson had a career day. He finished with 4.5 tackles, one forced fumble, and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a 103-yard touchdown score. It was the second interception returned for a touchdown in Ferguson’s two year CIS career.

In his debut with the X-Men, Ferguson intercepted a pass midway through the third quarter which he returned for a 78-yard touchdown.
