Rotary Club of East Nassau. - The Rotary Club of East Nassau recorded another milestone last week as it hosted the first meeting with the new Early Act Club of Genesis Academy. Excitement was in the air as Faculty Advisor Cally Allen announced the new Board. Rotarian Hope Sealy quizzed more than 25 students on what they thought should be their first projects and Rotarian Llewellyn Burrows gave them a brief talk about Rotary and their role in the club. New Rotarian Advisor Kristy Kemp is scheduled to take over the lead next week.

EarlyAct is a service club for elementary students from ages 5 to 13. A club is sponsored by one of the local Rotary clubs in the area in which the school is located. The mission and operation of EarlyAct are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide the foundation and natural succession into Interact.

EarlyAct provides young students the opportunity for gaining an increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. At a young age, all students can easily be encouraged to be caring and helpful. Their minds are open to recognise the dignity and worth of each individual which builds respect for others.

EarlyAct also engages students in character-building activities and prepares them for leadership roles to identify and carry out projects which benefit their school, local and global communities.

Rotary Club of Eleuthera. - During the weekend of October 31–November 2, a delegation of Rotarians and Rotaractors, representing Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas (RCOB), traveled to the beautiful island of Eleuthera for a weekend of activities including a Rotary Presidents’ Meeting at the Eleuthera Arts and Cultural Center.

The meeting, hosted by President Julian Carey and the Rotary Club of Eleuthera, and facilitated by Island Journeys and One Eleuthera Foundation, was very significant in that it marked the first time that a Rotary meeting of this nature was held on the island.

In attendance were Presidents and representatives from the Rotary Club of Eleuthera, The Rotary Club of West Nassau, The Rotary Club of Nassau, The Rotary Club of East Nassau, The Rotary Club of Southeast Nassau, The Rotary Club of Abaco, The Rotary Club of New Providence, The Rotaract Club of Eleuthera, The Rotaract Club of Nassau Sunset and The Rotaract Club of Southeast Nassau along with RCOB Secretary Mario Smith and Assistant Governors Karen Pinder and Stan Charlton who chaired the historic meeting.

Rotarians openly discussed the various projects and initiatives that Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of the Bahamas had completed to date and proposed new initiatives and areas of focus for the remainder of the Rotary year. Presidents also suggested projects for their various communities and strategized as to how these projects could be funded.

While in Eleuthera Rotarians were also treated to a tour of the island to get a first hand glimpse of some of the various projects that were accomplished through joint partnerships with the One Eleuthera Foundation. The tour included visits to South Eleuthera Emergency Partners (SEEP) facilities, the Ocean Hole Park, the School for Exceptional Learners, the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve, the South Eleuthera Mission and the Cancer Society of Eleuthera and its Backyard Farming Project.

Following a full day of activities Rotarians were treated to an evening of fellowship featuring dancing under the stars, a pig roast and backyard BBQ at the home of President Julian Carey and his wife.

As the weekend of activities came to end all in attendance agreed that it was a fun filled and productive weekend and promised to return at the next available opportunity.

Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas. - Scores of Bahamian Rotarians participated in a range of events last week during the visit of Rotary District Governor Dr Paul Brown and his wife, Kay.

As Governor of District 7020, Dr Brown, a surgeon from Jamaica, oversees some 85 Rotary Clubs in ten regional countries, 16 islands, including The Bahamas. He is required to visit all territories in the district during his one-year tenure.

Eight Rotary clubs and six Rotaract Clubs in The Bahamas held a joint meeting at the New Providence Community Church on Blake Road last Friday (November 14). Rotary clubs in Eleuthera and Abaco participated via Skype. The meeting was chaired by Assistant Governors Stanford Charlton and Karen Pinder.

The District Governor’s post is held for one year by a Rotarian nominated from one of the District’s territories – The Bahamas, Haiti, Cayman Islands, Turks & Caicos Islands, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, US Virgin Islands, Jamaica, St Maarten and St Martin/St Barts.

In the upcoming Rotary year (2015-2016), Bahamian Felix Stubbs will be the District 7020 Governor. Mr Stubbs has held many leadership roles in Rotary. He is a past president of the Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise, which he joined in 2001 as a charter member and is a past Assistant Governor for The Bahamas.

Under Mr Stubbs’ presidency, Nassau Sunrise grew its membership by more than 30% and he was awarded several Rotary citations. In 2006, he was recognised by his club as Rotarian of the Year. He is a major donor to the Rotary Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programmes.

In May 2016, at the end of Mr Stubbs’ year as District Governor, he will host other Rotarians from the District and around the world to a district conference at the Atlantis Resort in Nassau. More than 1,000 visitors are expected to attend the event.
