FNM Chairman questions why no further action over stolen vehicles

FREE National Movement Chairman Darron Cash questioned why no one has been charged more than two weeks after Customs and police officials revealed a seizure of more than $200,000 in stolen vehicles, ammunition and electronics in two containers shipped from the United States.

He also said it is puzzling why no one has been charged in connection the seizure of three luxury cars.

“It is simply unbelievable and highly suspicious that the inanimate 20-40 ft containers at the centre of this suspected smuggling scheme originated their very own shipment documents, got onto shipping vessels and landed in the Bahamas with no human involvement,” Mr Cash said in a statement released yesterday.

“As the Minister with responsibility for the Customs Department, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Perry Christie has to know that his handling of this case does not inspire confidence among the Bahamian public.”

Mr Cash questioned why police were able to “swiftly” solve and arraign suspects in a number of cases that involved “average Bahamians”, but the Customs’ matter is unresolved.

On September 17, police reported that the goods were found by the Department of Customs and police after an extensive investigation into what is believed to be a major smuggling operation with ties to the United States.

Officials found two 2007 Chevy Camaros, a 2014 Chevy Silverado and a 2015 Chevy Tahoe in addition to more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition and a few electronics inside two containers.

One of the Camaros was licensed in Ohio, USA, police said.

In a separate operation, three luxury cars (a 2011 Mercedes E350 coupe, 2014 Mercedes E350 sedan and a Porsche Cayenne Hybrid SUV) registered in the state of Colorado were also seized. Officials said two of those vehicles were listed on Customs declarations undervalued and the other was smuggled into the country.

However, police have said little about the seizures since then, telling The Tribune that the Department of Customs is handling the investigation.

And we are all wondering why we have not heard more from you Mr. Cash about all the shenanigans that have been going on at the Bank of The Bahamas ("BOB") over the past 3 years or so, resulting in the need for more than $30 million of additional capital to be invested in BOB last year by the National Insurance Board using the people's national insurance money! Your attention span Mr. Cash seems conveniently short as you jump from hot topic to hot topic each day with your voice now falling on deaf ears as nothing more than background noise in the distance. You're really beginning to sound a lot more like my neighbor's pot cake who will bark at anything including a mosquito flapping its wings. After a while, I simply don't hear that pot cake yapping away next door anymore!
