Spate of armed robberies

POLICE are appealing for public assistance in a spate of armed robberies over the weekend.

The string of robberies began on Friday morning when a 59-year-old woman was attacked by a man armed with scissors. The victim was walking on Shrimp Road shortly after 7am, according to police, who said the woman was a resident of McCullough Corner.

The woman was stabbed in one of her hands as she tried to fight off the culprit, who escaped on foot with her handbag, reported to have contained $200.

The second incident occurred several hours later when a 19-year-old man was robbed by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

The victim, a resident of Tucker Road, was walking on Huyler Street shortly before 3pm when the men approached him and demanded cash. According to police, the men escaped on foot into the Black Village area with $50.

A man from Faith Gardens became the third victim just before 5pm when he was approached by a silver coloured Mercury jeep as he was walking on Cowpen Road, west of Blue Hill Road.

According to police, two men and a woman were in the vehicle. One of the men was reportedly armed with a handgun and demanded cash. The culprits escaped with a black Nokia cell phone and $5.

On Saturday, police responded to an armed robbery at an East Street hair and beauty supply store around 1:30pm. A man, armed with a handgun, walked into the store and demanded cash. According to police the gunman escaped with an unspecified amount of money from the cash register, a Samsung cell phone, and bulks of Brazilian hair.

Later that evening a 19-year-old woman was robbed by three men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

The woman, a resident of Montell Heights, was walking on Robinson Road around 9:30pm when the men approached her and took an unspecified amount of cash, jewellery and a blue cell phone before they escaped in the area of Montell Heights.

Police are appealing for anyone with information that might assist investigations to solve these matters to anonymously call 919 or Crime Stoppers at 328-TIPS (8477) on New Providence or 1-242-300-8476 in the Family Islands.
