Pre-school gives $200 to help fight cancer

By RICARDO WELLS

KIND hearted pre-schoolers from the One on One Pre-School proved their generosity by donating $200 to breast cancer awareness last week after hearing of the inaugural Dunking For Boobies event.

Kristine Sandiford, owner and director at One on One Pre-School, at Fourth Terrace, Palmdale, heard the event being broadcast on the Radio House stations while the children were out on a field trip downtown and thought that it would be an opportunity to use the event as a teaching moment and join in the fun on Shirley Street.

The collaborative effort by Radio House, Doctors Hospital, Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative Foundation, CIBC FirstCaribbean Bank, Caribbean Bottling Company, Back to Health and Walk for the Cure raised $3,400 in four hours on Friday.

Mrs Sandiford explained that the school usually makes an effort to raise money to contribute to organisations around the country at this time of year. “We made it a thing, to involve our kids, parents and staff to come together, identify groups that need help and through parental assistance we donate,” she said.

Mrs Sandiford, an avid listener of Y98FM, requested contributions of $2, all to be pooled and donated, and the children put the $200 in the pink collection box. They were taken on a 25-minute tour of the radio stations by Dion “da Butcha” Knowles, the programme director, who put them on 100Jamz with Joe Coolz and on Cool 96 with Hope Shelly-Anne.

“We try to teach our children the value of giving when they are not the ones in need,” Mrs Sandiford said. “If we teach them this mindset, we can improve a lot that ails our society. At One on One, we teach the motto of TEAM: that means, together, everyone achieves more. That’s what we want them to carry away and believe.”

October is observed around the world as breast cancer awareness month.
