A MAN died in hospital yesterday afternoon after he was allegedly shot by a store owner during an attempted armed robbery, police said.

The alleged attempted robbery occurred just after 12:30pm at a store on Lincoln Boulevard, however, police would not reveal the name of the establishment.

Police said the man later “turned up” at the Princess Margaret Hospital yesterday afternoon with several gunshot wounds in his chest.

According to police, the victim arrived at the hospital around 2pm and died of his injuries a short time later.

Police have a man in custody who is assisting them with their investigations.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 911 or 919, the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS.

This shooting came three days after armed robbers engaged police in a shoot out at a web shop on Faith Avenue South when officers caught them in the middle of a robbery on Friday night.

It was one of three shooting incidents that police reported over the weekend.

Police also reported that an officer shot a shop breaking suspect as he attempted to enter a building on East Street South on Saturday shortly after 9:30am.

Last week Prime Minister Perry Christie said the government will hold several “special meetings” with the police commissioner and national security minister to decide what can be done “immediately” to stop the escalating crime in New Providence.

His comments came hours after his “friend” Latore Mackey, who was his press secretary and deputy director of Bahamas Information Services, was shot and killed while driving through Market Street last Monday.

Mr Mackey was one of five men killed in less than 36 hours after a weekend of violence in the capital.

Mr Christie said the government is “challenged” to find a solution to the recent spate of murders, however, he said, his administration will be “relentless in (its) effort” to decrease crime and the fear of crime before it becomes “uncontrollable.”

If we had more citizens defending themselves instead of being like sheep we'd help rid our country of these parasites....but then again, an armed, informed and strong populace is NOT what the Bahamian government wants.....

An armed populace doesn't result from an informed populace.

An informed populace would acknowledge that the more guns that are in circulation the more gun crime occurs.

Don't believe me? High rates of gun violence in the world: USA and Venezuela Low rates of gun violence in the world: Japan and Singapore

Why is Latore Mackey constantly referred to as the PMs "friend" in quotes?? Was he not his Press Secretary or something of that sort? What's being implied with the quotes?

Excellent, another criminal dead. Shoot them all I say. Hopefully we will run out of criminals soon.

Good shooting store owner. Several in the chest... from distance I suspect. A real marksman. Keep practicing though as I am sure you will be put to the test again (I sincerely hope not).
