'King of Comedy' celebrates 65th birthday with new play

THE Caribbean’s “King of Comedy” Oliver Samuels is bringing his latest theatre production, “Dollyhouse” to the Bahamas.

Presented by Capital City Marketing, the comedy play will feature a mix of favourite, hot button topics, including politics, power, intimacy, race, class, mistrust and betrayal – all presented in a style that only Oliver can produce. “Unu jus ain’t seen nutten yet,” the Jamaican playwright said when asked how the new play measures up to his past hits.

This one will be a big celebration because it is Oliver’s 65th birthday, and what does the “King of Comedy” do when it is time to celebrate? He assembles the best actors in Caribbean theatre today and creates another blockbuster.

“Dollyhouse”, Oliver promises, depicts the crazy drama, unavoidable tragedies and constant comedy that occurs daily in multi-dwelling structures in Jamaica, commonly known as tenement yards.

Just imagine the levels of insanity when one is forced to live in a tenement yard with an Oliver Samuels character as the stern, overbearing landlord, constantly showing who is the world boss of landlords, when occupants include a middle-aged Chinese woman whose hormones are going wild, a young dreadlocked man who carries five phones and about six different names, a higgler who insists that she is only behind on her rent for an one-room and shared bathroom due to her finishing up her four-storey mansion in the hills, and two bad man who “just not into di rent paying thing”.

Many speculated how Oliver would be able to follow up his successive hits like “Who A Di Don?” and “Embassy Saga”, but critics are already saying that “Dollyhouse” confirms Oliver’s living legend status. The production premiered on Mother’s Day of this year and will tour all major markets around the world.

In the Bahamas, the production of “Dollyhouse” will be held on Sunday, October 12, during the “Heroes Day” holiday weekend in at the Rainforest Theatre, Cable Beach.

Oliver’s previous successful performances here in the Bahamas include “Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing” (2009), “Assistant Thief” (2006), “Ras Noah and the Hawk” (2005) and “Guava Jelly” (2004).

“We are confident that this year’s ‘Dollyhouse’ will also be a huge success. The Bahamas market is hungry for Oliver again,” said Capital City Marketing, which has presented several of productions by the playwright in the past.

“We expect a sold-out event at the Crystal Palace, Rainforest Theatre, especially as this is a special birthday year for Oliver; we will have a great celebration. Great opportunities exist for partners to come on board with this great event,” said Kathy Ingraham of Capital City Marketing.

‘ “Dollyouse” will feature taboo topics such as interracial relationships in Jamaica, the effects of miscarriage on women, cybersex, lottery scamming and police perverting the course of justice in the manner that only Oliver Samuels can – tastefully, family friendly but extremely humorous with life lessons that will leave the audience talking about the show and the story lines for a very long time.”
