ART OF GRAPHIX: Building your website on solid foundations

So, you are looking to hire a web design company. What makes one better than another? Web designers come in a variety of shapes, sizes and flavours, and they are definitely not a ‘one-size fits all’ type of offering.

Nonetheless, by asking these questions up front, you can avoid the major pitfalls that have caused many web design projects to go downhill. Listed here are the second batch of questions that will assist you in making the best web designer choice.

What is a Domain name registration?: The domain name is the name of your website (the something-something.com) that represents you. Before a website can go live, it needs a name, which most firms will handle. Find out if the name you want for your site is available, if they will register it, how many years the domain name registration is for and the cost.

Who owns the Domain name?: The correct answer should be ‘you’. Make sure your domain name registrations and hosting accounts are signed in your name, and not the web design company’s. Also know where your website’s domain name is registered, plus all user names, passwords and the hosting company’s name. You may want to find out, before signing any agreement, who will ultimately own the website and the domain names.

The last thing you need is an unexpected legal dispute because you did not read the fine prints. Moreover, transferring ownership of domain names or hosting accounts at a later stage can be problematic, especially if two years later your web designer has closed up shop and moved on to other ventures.

Who owns the site?: I cannot express the importance of this question. Some web designers, in their agreement, will assert ownership of the design and programming as their own copyrighted work. Believe it or not, in the state of Texas, if someone builds a website for you, they own it. That’s right, even if you paid them for it.

By the same token, ask about the web design firm’s policy and negotiate terms in advance. For example, ensure that the company “waives” ownership and transfers all legal rights to you. These should include site files, hosting access account, back-end administration platform and server. That way, if you ever become dissatisfied, you have the opportunity to hire another developer without starting over.

Will I be able to see the website while it is being built?: Website design should be a collaborative effort. Reputable web design firms will ensure their client’s website is available for viewing during each phase to permit recommendations.

How much do they charge for hosting?: Typically, a one-time price is paid for the website and a monthly price for hosting. Make sure you understand exactly what you will be charged every month by the web design company.

Do you offer web hosting services?: As part of their website services, some design companies offer web hosting. This means your website will reside on their hosting server. Therefore, ask whether the fee includes a unique IP address; how much bandwidth, processing power and disk space are included; guaranteed uptime and speed access; type of control panel or user interface; and methods of access to tech support. These are all relevant.

How do you measure results after the site goes live? Your relationship with the web design company should not end once your site goes live. Websites are not billboards, and nor should they be launched then forgotten.

Technically, a good website is always under construction. Your website should change every month in order to remain relevant. I firmly believe long-term website support is a privilege, not a right.

How can I access my website statistics without contacting you?: Ask about a password to view your website statistics online at any time.

As a final point, choosing a professional web design company does not have to be an overwhelming process. But it is wise to ask far-reaching questions before concluding any project agreement.

Knowing the facts ensures that you achieve tangible results, which translate into a measurable return on your website investment. So ask your developer everything. Until we meet again, fill your life with memories rather than regrets. Enjoy life and stay on top of your game.
