Rotaract Club of East Nassau To Host Third Annual Entrepreneurship Panel Discussion

The Rotaract Club of East Nassau is proud to announce that we will be hosting our Third Annual Entrepreneurship Panel Discussion in light of District 7020’s New Generations Month, “New Generations: Bahamian Entrepreneurship”. The event will be held at the Nassau Yacht Club on Wednesday, October 1st, 2014 at 6:00pm.

This year’s panelists are young entrepreneurs with different professional experiences and backgrounds, including Mr. Jaime Lewis (President, Islandz), Ms. Janine Carey (Owner, Liquid Nutrition), Mr. Giorgio Knowles (President, Lucari) and Mrs. Amanda Ferguson (Founder/Creative Director, Biggity). Even the moderator, Noelle Nicolls (Founder/Managing Director, Domestic Tourist) is no stranger to stepping out on her own.

Our goal is to inspire and educate the new generation in regards to owning their own businesses. The event will kick off with cocktails and networking, followed by the moderated panel discussion with talking points set to include: 1) starting your business, 2) pros and cons during the first few years, and 3) current plans and goals. The audience will also be given a chance to interact with the panelists during the Q&A portion.

Past entrepreneurship panels have proven a success and we are delighted to see that the interest remains strong. Last year, under the directorship of President Taran Mackey and Vice President Adrian Forsythe, the “I Am My Own Boss: Bahamian Entrepreneurship” panel discussion was impressively received, with a panel that comprised of speakers Mr. Barry Rassin (President, Doctor’s Hospital), Mr. Anthony Ferguson, CFA, MCSI, CIArb (President, CFAL) and Ms. Alana Rodgers (Founder/Chief Culinary Ambassador, Tru Bahamian Food Tours and Founder/Director, Hands For Hunger. The event’s moderator was Dianne Phillips (Founder/President, Dianne Phillips & Associates), who also served as a speaker on the previous year’s panel. The club also held its first “Women In The Workplace Panel Discussion” in 2013.

“This year’s event promises to be an interesting and lively one,” says Vice President and Director of Professional Development Sarah Major. “We look forward to seeing you there!”

“Kiwanis Clubs of the Bahamas donates play grounds to Cat Island Schools”

A native daughter of the soil, a descendant from Dumfries and New Bight, Lieutenant Governor Christine King’s passion for service took her beyond the scope of New Providence where she settled the last 24 years. It took her back to her home town where she was raised, to give back to the children in those northern settlements; Dumfries and Orange Creek. She was instrumental in the funding and organization of the construction of the two playgrounds which she and the Kiwanis Clubs of the Bahamas members flew down and officially opened last Saturday. About 30 Kiwanians, travelled to Cat Island to officially launch its 2013-2014 Kiwanis Bahamas signature project.

Located just behind the Dumfries Primary and Orange Creek Primary Schools are playgrounds constructed with all native cedar wood carved and screwed together with stainless steel screws. Logs are buried in the ground at the required specifications. These playgrounds are not the ordinary metal or treated wood material you will find in the city but rather one matching the ambiance and simplicity of the island living, environmentally friendly and will withstand the salt air for years to come.

The Kiwanis Club is grateful to our partners who would have assisted in many ways, contributed financially via fundraisers particularly the 2013 Installation Ball and LG Christine’s signature birthday fundraiser “Party for A Park”. Kiwanians who made special donations; Distinguished President Patrice, Past Treasurer Shanika, District Administrator Melford and Service Leadership Programs we thank you so very much.

Special recognition must be given to Dave Thiessen, Julian Russell, Pamela Poitier, Stanley Webb; community leaders of the “Da Com Up Group” along with the 2014 graduation class of boys of Arthur’s Town High School who undertook the construction and all persons working to see this project a reality.

Students from both school gathered at the Orange Creek playground where the official ceremony was held. After the brief opening the children delightfully ran to the playground and were all excited. They were treated to a fun day with food fun and fellowship. The community and school leaders were all so appreciative and gave remark of gratitude to the Kiwanis Clubs and its leader LG Christine. Accepting the gifts of the playground was Superintendent of Education for Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador, Mr. Garth King; Principal at Orange Creek Primary, Ms. Olivia King and Principal of Dumfries Primary Mrs. Coreen King. Representative of the local contractors “Da Com UP Group” Ms. Pamela Poitier presented the Park to Kiwanis and spoke on behalf of Mr. Dave Thiessen and Julian Russell.

Also, while on Cat Island Kiwanians visited the two schools and made small monetary but much appreciated donations along with a copier equipped with paper and replacement ink. Also, Kiwanians visited the Key Club at the Old Bight High School where members held their meeting and officers received training. Key Club International, the largest high school service organization in the world, empowers its members to lead and serve by cultivating leadership skills, developing friendships, and performing community service. Key Club members have a passion for helping others and gain leadership skills they will carry with them for a lifetime. The Key Club was reorganized and 18 members are enrolled.
