A WOMAN, her four-year-son and two-year-old daughter are all fighting for their lives in hospital after they were hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) as they attempted to cross a highway on Monday.

According to reports, shortly after 6pm, the 26-year-old mother was on the pedestrian crossing with her two young children, attempting to cross from the northern side of Tonique Williams Darling Highway, when they were struck by a Chevy Equinox, driven by a man.

The victims were all taken to hospital where the woman and her son are listed in critical condition and the little girl is listed in serious condition.

The driver is assisting police with their investigations.

Officer-in-charge of the Traffic Division, Superintendent Craig Stubbs said police are not sure if speed played a factor in the accident.

He is asking anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 911 or 919 or contact the Traffic Police Station. Investigations are continuing.

That street is too" fast" for a pedestrian crossing. You don't see pedestrian crossings on highways in the US. I just encountered a CRAZY woman crossing 4 lanes of Prince Charles like she was out for an afternoon stroll. Crossing two lanes and standing in the middle of the highway like an idiot isn't any better either. Police need to start issuing tickets to pedestrians

They do this in New Zealand and Australia where pedestrians are issued tickets for improper use of the road. This is a very good idea, which means it probably won't work here.

I too agree that it seems foolish to have a pedestrian crossing on a major highway like TWD highway. Cars are travelling at high speeds on these roadways, it makes no sense to put people's lives in danger this way. I am very sorry for the mother and her two children and pray to God that they make it.

These streets are built for speed and pedestrians were (are) just an afterthought. Wasn't a teenage cyclist killed there not even two months ago? Also, many drivers don't seem to realize their cars have gas and BRAKE pedals. Sad situation.
