Bahama Girl Guides

Bahama Girl Guides Association. - The campaign to build a new headquarters for the Bahama Girl Guides Association (BAGA), which is celebrating its centenary, received a fillip when Sir Durward Knowles presented a cheque for $10,000 to assist with the construction.

Sir Durward made the donation in memory of his sister, Zoe Knowles, who was the first and only Captain of Sea Rangers, a senior group of the Girl Guides. He recalled how she ensured that the Sea Rangers were proficient in skills required for life saving and other emergencies that occurred at sea.

Every year, she took the Sea Rangers to The Current, North Eleuthera, on an expedition for the practical application of their skills.

Sir Durward has urged others to help the Girl Guides achieve their goal of building a new headquarters during their centennial celebrations in 2015. “I have been associated with the Girl Guides for many years, working with Barbara Brown and Hadyn Middleton on the policy, organisation and rules for the Association,” he said.

He paid tribute to Clarice Granger, the longest serving BAGA Chief Commissioner and current council member, for her distinguished service with the organisation. “I cannot thank these persons enough, especially Mrs Granger for her contribution to the girls of The Bahamas. Even today she is working hard to make the building a reality. While she looks 50 she is almost 90. I understand why she wants to ensure that there is a building where girls can continue to become good citizens.

“I am in my 90s, I would really like to see the building before I go on to my eternal reward,” he quipped.

Donations can be sent to the Bahamas Girl Guides Association, PO Box 4545, Nassau. Further information from 322 4342 or email bahamasgirlguides@msn.com.
