Fire thought to have been started by vagrants

A TWO-storey abandoned building near Government House was substantially damaged by fire yesterday in what investigators believe to be the work of vagrants who sought shelter in the structure.

Fire Services chief Walter Evans said the blaze presented a challenge for firemen because there was a high risk of the fire spreading to the nearby Town Hotel on Cumberland Street.

The building was not powered by electricity, Mr Evans said. The fire broke out shortly before 5pm.

He said as investigations continue, police will be looking for the building’s owners to discuss the property having sufficient security with a view to preventing vagrants from entering the property.
