Welcome work of the auditor

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Rather than cry foul, the co-chairs of Urban Renewal should welcome an investigation to flush out any irregularities that may exist under the programme.

Urban Renewal has provided a wholesome and safe refuge for thousands of Bahamian children and the auditor general is acting in the public interest by determining whether public funds have been put to proper use.

I am perplexed as to why the co-chairs would seek to discredit the auditor-general for doing his job. As far as I am aware, the report neither attacks the programme nor the co-chairs. There is no suggestion of impropriety on the part of those responsible for the programme. So why all the hollering?

The co-chairs have a duty to confront the issues raised in the report in an open and transparent manner. What is the process for awarding contracts? Who is responsible for making sure these projects are brought to a successful conclusion? Who is ACCOUNTABLE for the expenditure of the people’s money?

The cavalier attitude concerning our tax dollars really has to end, especially in light of the heavy VAT burden the public has been saddled with. Accountability is a hallmark of democracy.

It appears that some thing is amiss Why did the Guardian receive the report before any one else? who gave it to them? was it the Auditor or was it shocked Chipman?. I am qiite sure neither of the co chairs went into urban renewal to steal or aid any one in stealing , It was their desire to help the less fortunate. I am sure the FNM and those who follow them are over joyed with this report. But I am quite sure that all will be accounted for.
