Meeting held for Haitian community

SCORES of Haitians and Bahamians of Haitian descent attended a “town hall” meeting and information session on issues affecting the community last weekend.

Hosted by The Connection, the meeting showcased presentations from health experts, community leaders, and officials from the American and Haitian embassies.

More than 100 persons attended the information forum held at Church of God’s Auditorium at Joe Farrington Road on Saturday.

Presenters included: Susan Bethel, of the Central Eleuthera Haitian Bahamian Association; Louby Georges, former radio show host and founding member of The Connection; Nathan Hara, consular chief at the US Embassy; Pastor Cherelus Exante, of the Haitian Pastors Association; Craig Butler, attorney and former Bamboo Town independent candidate; Joseph Darville, vice president of the Grand Bahama Human Rights Association; Charlene Jean; Claudy Blaise, first secretary general at the Haitian Embassy; and Dr Albert François.

Formed in November last year, The Connection seeks to “bridge the gap” between the migrant community and Bahamian society through education and community service initiatives. The group’s central goal is to assist persons of Haitian descent to positively integrate into Bahamian life by providing tools that will allow them to become informed and contributing citizens and residents.
