POLICE have 15 people, including one woman, in custody in connection with the shooting death of Jamaal Huyler.

Huyler was shot twice in the head while buying breakfast at a popular food stand on Monday morning.

Superintendent B K Bonamy Jr, head of homicide investigations at the Central Detective Unit, said the suspects were all “picked up” between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

“We are trying to ascertain the motive for the murder,” Supt Bonamy said yesterday.

“So we are speaking to these persons with the hopes of getting the information we need to solve to murder.”

Police say Huyler was at Roosies breakfast stand in the Oakes Field area around 8am when he was approached by two men driving a green SUV, who later shot him.

When police arrived on the scene, the victim was lying on his back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An employee of BTC, he reportedly visited the food stand every day.

His death brought the country’s murder count to 92 for the year, according to The Tribune’s records.

Police found the suspects’ vehicle on Monday abandoned on Boyd road. It had reportedly been stolen. A short while later they arrested an man and woman.

Police are also investigating the deaths of two men last week.

The first victim was shot in the head on August 4, while driving on Augusta Street.

He crashed into a fence and died. Last Thursday, police said a man was found shot dead in a Honda on East Street and Cordeaux Avenue.

Anyone with information on any of these homicides is asked to contact police at 911 or 919, the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS.

"Arrested"? Don't they usually say "brought in for questioning"? 15 sounds like a very big fishing net... unless a lot of people wanted him dead. But if he was that bad, the sad part is, killing him won't solve anything, he's just a symptom of the problem.

Having a casual conversation with a few young males. They say the average guy does not feel safe on the streets or home so more and more young men are taking up arms. The preference these days is more high powered guns that can hold more rounds. Their reason being "when they come to collect you they ain't sending one person no more, they sending three and four "niggas" and all of them strap. Guys would take chance traveling with weapons in their car rather than being caught off guard. There is also a lot of young men out there who are hurting because they have lost family or best friends in this "war". If they know who the person is who did the murder and don't see the police doing nothing about it they eventually go after the person. That is the reason you hear about guys who had changed their lives "a few years ago" getting killed. The police have a tough job on their hands. The problem with these killings is going to get worse before it get better.

This was the PLP's plan for dealing with the unemployment issue. If there's less young men looking for work (i.e. they're dead now) then that can only mean that the economy is doing better, right?

Also, we need to stop looking at the big picture and focus on specific aspects. For example, there were no murders last night. This means that we are turning the corner on violent crime.
