Three of six champions crowned in the AID Claycourt

AFTER the completion of the first of the two-week AID Claycourt Championships at the Gym Tennis Courts in Winton Meadows, three of the six champions - two in singles and one in doubles - have been decided,

In the boys’ under-18 singles, No.2 seed Joshua Turnquest secured the title with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of top seed Bradley Fowler. Turnquest advanced to the final with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Donte Armbrister, while Fowler got by Brandon Taylor 6-3, 6-2.

And in the men’s junior veterans singles, top seed Larry Rolle pulled off an identical 6-3, 6-3 victory over No.2 seed Harrington Saunders. Rolle knocked off Devin Fisher 6-4, 7-6 (9) in his semi-final match to advance to the final.

Saunders prevailed with a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 come-from-behind win over No.4 seed Stephen Thompson.

On the doubles side, the first champions crowned were William Fountain and Robert Smith. The top seeded team had a marathon 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 10-6 win over the No.2 seeded team of Michael Cooper and Joshua Turnquest in the limited draw in the men’s open doubles.

The team of Fountain and Smith won 6-2, 6-0 over Dallas Roberts and Isaacs Roberts and the duo of Cooper and Turnquest prevailed with a walk over win over Deshon Fox and Michael Horton.

Still left to be decided over the final week of play are the men’s open singles where Joshua Turnquest and William Fountain are the top two seeds respectively.

The men’s junior vets doubles with Terry North and Mickey Williams as the top seeds and Andrew Barr and Larry Rolle at No.2 and the mixed doubles with Michael Cooper and Iesha Shepherd as the top seeds and Brazile Hamilton and Dominique Mortier as the No.2 seeds.

The action in the tournament is scheduled to resume 4pm today. The tournament, sponsored annually by AID and hosted by the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association, is slated to wrap up on Saturday. Mickey Williams serves as the tournament referee.
