Reasons for removing Gomez make no sense

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Some very strange things have been said in all the talk surrounding the Baha Mar crisis but the strangest of all have come from the Prime Minister Perry Christie and Minister of State Damian Gomez as to the reason why he (Mr. Gomez) was removed as the Government’s lawyer in the court case.

We are told that removing Mr Gomez was to avoid giving the impression that the Cabinet was involved, to avoid giving the appearance of government interference in the process. That makes absolutely no sense at all and if it is designed to fool anybody it will not work.

It is the Government that has brought the winding up action against Baha Mar and no amount of double talk can alter that. To be clear: that is the perception and that is the fact. The Government brought the petition for winding up and so the Government cannot by any stretch of the imagination or violence to the English language claim to be impartial.

As the Government’s lawyer in this case, Mr Gomez had to take instructions from his client which is the Government, the Cabinet. As the Government’s lawyer in this case the English QC replacing Mr Gomez has to take his instructions from whom? Why from the same Government, the same Cabinet, of course.

Mr Christie and Mr Gomez should have more respect for the intelligence of the Bahamian people and give them the real reasons why Mr Gomez was removed.

Well, you’ve got to realize that you really can’t take what they say seriously.

It seems to me that the State Minister divested himself of this ordeal privately, and the smooth over story to the public, per the Prime Minister was to simply assert that they are “avoiding the appearance of government interference”.

That tickles my heart.
