A Freeport man was charged with murder in the Freeport Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Philip Alexander Sweeting, 23, of Sunridge Road, appeared before Magistrate Charlton Smith in Court Two, where he was charged with the murder of 40-year-old Whitfield Jones.

It is alleged that on Tuesday, December 1, the accused intentionally and unlawfully caused Jones’ death. Sweeting was not required to enter a plea to the murder charge, which is an indictable offence.

Jones, a resident of Coral Reef Estates, was shot to death last Tuesday at Redwood Lane, Freeport, pushing the island’s homicide count to 18 for the year.

Magistrate Forbes adjourned the matter to April 16, 2016 when a preliminary inquiry will be held to determine whether there is sufficient evidence against Sweeting to stand trial for murder in the Supreme Court.

In the meantime, Sweeting was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services in Nassau.
