How to secure your home and light bill

Do your outdoor security lights make you feel safe? I hope so, because many Bahamians are spending $15-30 every month to run each light bulb. If you have three of them, that is about $1,000 on your electric bill per year.

To go without that security is really not an option. So how can we reduce the cost of running our much-needed security lighting?

Adding a motion sensor to your light fixture is one of the most effective ways to cut the bill. One of these can easily turn a 10-hour run time into just a few minutes. Motion sensors are great for places that only need outdoor light when somebody is outside, such as most homes. For people interested in solar lighting, an infra-red motion sensor is a must. This allows a smaller, more affordable system to be as brilliant and useful as a much larger, more costly system.

We recommend using photo controls with your security lighting. These add convenience because you no longer have to think about turning your light on and off. Do you feel embarrassed when you get home after a long day’s work, and realise you forgot to turn off your night security lights earlier that morning? Mistakes like that can add hundreds of dollars to your light bill every year. Photo controls take care of that for you. Likewise, if the sun rises before you do, your photo control will turn off your security lighting while you are asleep, saving you money. One caveat here: Try to make sure your photo control is not under direct shading, as that can trick the sensor into running the light longer than necessary.

Finally, switch out your old incandescent and metal halide light bulbs to LED bulbs. Why? These use up to 80 per cent less power to provide brilliant light. Many LEDs come with a five-year warranty, which is a great reason to buy Bahamian, since a local provider can honour a warranty that you would void if you imported the bulbs yourself.

Beyond that, the typical life expectancy is 10-15 years for a single LED light bulb. Imagine not having to change a light bulb for a decade. That is not fantasy; it is reality. It also leads to less waste in the garbage dump.

Depending on the bulb size you need, outdoor security LEDs often cost $40-400, and save $75-$300 every year. That means the money you save every month pays for the light before the warranty even expires. Itis a no-brainer investment. Just by changing your light bulbs, you can afford extra gas in the car every month, another lunch out every week or more minutes on your phone every day. And, if you get a solar version, you save even more money and eliminate the need for the electricity company altogether.

Who would have thought that a few small changes to your outdoor security lighting could makes such a big impact on the electric bill? Other Bahamians are enjoying the benefits. Talk to an energy solutions expert today so you can start saving, too.

What a lie

a 100 watt bulb at 10 hrs a day is 1000 watts consumption i.e. 1khw, multiply this by 30 days and thats 30 kwhs , 30kwhs x $.45 /kwh = $13.50 per month x 12 months = $162.00 per year per bulb.

Wanna cut the cost in half, put in a 50 watt bulb.

Wanna save money don't buy from these guys, go online to ebay and buy LED bulbs for $3.00 per piece.

Or buy the whole LED Security fixture on Ebay for $20.00

Everything here costs too much because of GREED.

Take care of yourself, don't trust that anyone here has your interests at heart!

Lie is too harsh, definitely an exaggeration but the savings are real and the figures in this article are in the ball park. I know because I did extensive research and just replaced my security lights with LEDs and there are huge savings.

I replaced 4- 100 w floodlights which used each per night roughly 1000 watts or 1 kWh. Per year this translated to 4 ( # of bulbs) x 365 days per year x .40 cents per kWh = $584 just for elec for security lights.

I replaced these 4 bulbs with LED bulbs that gave 90 watts of light but burned just 18 watts in power. So it cost me now $584/5 = 116.8 per year for a savings of $467. That is a huge savings and definitely worth it. These bulbs are amazing, give fantastic light, barely get hot and are beautiful!

Now outdoor wet rated LEDs cost far more than the $3 you quoted. A good one cost at least $25 in the U.S. Before taxes and shipping, and they do have a life span of 10-15 years.

I bought one in a state where the local utility was mandated to subsidize light bulbs for its customers and I purchased my bulbs for $16. Our power company should be mandated by URCA to subsidize the costs of LEDs for all Bahamians. But not to use LEDs in your home is literally throwing money away.

Hey DonAnthony, number one is that your new LED bulbs don't emit 90 watts of light, as the "watt(s)" unit is a measure of power consumption. Light output is measured in Lumens not watts.

You can buy 100 watt equivalent LED security floodlights with camera and SD card on ebay or at home depot for about $20.00 each.

My point was that buying it here is a ripoff. Noting that you can buy LED Replacement for regular bulbs on ebay for $.79 , something that you'll pay near $10.00 a piece for here.

I agree with you that it is considerably cheaper to purchase yourself online. This is the case for almost everything in the Bahamas. Local businesses have considerable overhead costs so I empathize to an extent, however, in many cases their profit margin seems excessive.

The prices you quote seem quite low, it all depends on the manufacturer and quality of the LED. For outdoor use you need a very high quality bulb, I always prefer to pay extra for quality, which is critical for a bulb that will be exposed to the elements. I bought GE and I have no doubt they will last at least 10 years.

Just want to encourage Bahamians to use LEDs, which is the point of this article, they are good for the pocketbook and good for the environment. Also we really need eco friendly policy intiatives, which have been sorely lacking, such as subsidizing the cost of purchasing LEDs.

For additional information, always use LED bulbs or fixtures rated 100-250 volts, which gives them much greater surge and spike resistance, especially with our erratic power grid. Many LED lights are rated 120Volts specifically, these will blow/burn out in much shorter times. To the local vs. foreign purchase, different subject covered by Caveat Emptor, In everything. Let the Buyer Beware.
