POLICE arrested a man and a woman Monday night in connection with a hit and run accident on Sunday that left a man dead.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Stephen Dean said the couple was arrested shorty after 10pm by officers of the Select Enforcement Unit.

According to Inspector Harry Williams of the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Traffic Division, the driver of a black SUV fatally struck a pedestrian and left the scene, leaving the victim in a “pool of blood.”

The incident took place shortly after 4am on Sunday, west of Victoria Avenue.

“According to our information, a male was travelling east along Bay Street in a dark coloured vehicle, believed to be a SUV, when he struck a pedestrian and fled the scene,” Insp Williams said.

“The driver did not bother to stop and left the man in a pool of his own blood to die. An ambulance was called and the man was taken to hospital but died shortly after his arrival.”

Investigations continue.

A man is also in custody in connection with the shooting death of Ashton Rashard Demeritte last Sunday, police said.

Demeritte’s death took the country’s murder count to 141 for the year.

Police said the victim was sitting in a vehicle outside a nightclub when a man armed with a handgun approached and shot him multiple times before fleeing the area in a white vehicle.

The Tribune understands that a woman, who was in the car with the victim, drove him to the hospital where he died a short time later. The woman was unharmed during the shooting.

The Tribune also understands that the victim was involved in an argument with several men in the nightclub before the shooting.

Anyone with information about this homicide is asked to contact police at 911 or 919, the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 328-TIPS.
